Seven Exciting Updates for the Redesigned 2026 Jeep Cherokee

After a two-year hiatus, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee has arrived more capable, more powerful, and more efficient than ever!

This compact SUV has always been a Jeep fan favorite. It combines the bold personality and abilities of a Jeep with a city-friendly frame and commuter-friendly powertrain. That’s always been true, but after a two-year hiatus, Jeep really stepped up its game with this small but mighty model.

The Jeep Cherokee returns with exciting changes to its powertrain, dimensions, and technology. We’re so excited to show it off to drivers who have been missing this plucky model. And if you’re new to the Cherokee, but have been meaning to check it out, we think the 2026 model is the perfect way into the lineup.

Here are some of the most exciting updates for the 2026 Cherokee!

#1 - A New Hybrid Powertrain

Jeep has demonstrated a continued commitment to electrifying more of its lineup. We’ve seen it in other models, like the rugged Wrangler, with its plug-in hybrid 4xe variant, and the Grand Cherokee, which also boasts a plug-in hybrid option.

Now, the Cherokee gets even more efficient, thanks to a hybrid powertrain. In a bold move, this is the only powertrain available for the 2026 model. The pure gas options of yesteryear are gone. But, we don’t think you’ll miss them, since the new 1.6L turbo-four hybrid powertrain boasts 210 hp, 230 lb-ft of torque, and 3,500 lbs of towing abilities.

Jeep reports that the new 2026 Cherokee achieves 37 MPG combined and a 500-mile range. With figures like those, you don’t need to hesitate to head off towards that next big adventure for fear of fuel costs. You can even tackle your daily drive to work many, many times before you have to fill your tank.

The decision to give the Cherokee a standard hybrid powertrain option aligns with the model’s fanbase, who historically want an efficient vehicle, and, as frequent wilderness explorers, are concerned with emissions.

#2 - Rugged 4x4, Standard

While prior-year Cherokee models were available with front-wheel drive or 4x4, the 2026 Cherokee comes standard as a 4x4 model. It can get away with it, too, since its hybrid powertrain means you aren’t sacrificing efficiency for traction.

With 4x4, the Cherokee is prepared to tackle wet roads after the rain and slippery trails outside of the city. It brings the rugged personality traits of the Jeep family more to the forefront of the model, making it a distinctly adventure-ready SUV.

#3 - More Cargo Space—Way More

We know that, when some drivers hear the word “compact,” they think of a model that can’t carry much stuff. That couldn’t be further from the truth in the redesigned Cherokee.

For the 2026 model year, Jeep introduces a Cherokee with increased cargo capacity compared to the previous models. With the rear seats down, you can fit 68.3 cu.ft. of cargo in the new Cherokee, which is equivalent to a large dog crate.

Of course, you don’t need to have a dog to take advantage of all of that space. You can get an extra cooler in there. You can get a few more backpacks in there. You can pack more pumps for your inner tubes and dirt bikes.

The hybrid powertrain is important to keep in mind here. Usually, when we hear that a vehicle has increased in size, we assume it has decreased in efficiency. However, by introducing a hybrid powertrain, Jeep gained room to maneuver regarding vehicle size.

#4 - A Larger Touchscreen

Jeep got with the times in the 2026 Cherokee, increasing the size of its standard touchscreen from 8.4 inches to 12.3 inches. That’s nearly four extra inches of display screen. The graphics of your navigation app will be larger. Incoming caller info will be easier to see. Your smartphone app icons will be easier to locate.

Today’s drivers have grown accustomed to utilizing smartphone connectivity in their vehicles. They rely on it for maps, music, news, traffic reports, and so much more. And when it comes to the graphics for this information, bigger is always better.

#5 - Active Driving Assist

The 2023 Cherokee did have some solid driver-assist features, like lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross path detection. However, it did not have Active Driving Assist, and the 2026 model does.

Active Driving Assist combines the perks of adaptive cruise control with lane centering. It not only maintains your preset speed but also maintains a desired following distance, slowing down when necessary and speeding back up when it’s safe to do so. Plus, it can handle steering for you, keeping you centered in your lane.

We think this feature will really appeal to commuters interested in the Cherokee. If you travel long stretches of highway every day, those little maneuvers can become tiring. Active driving assist can handle them for you.

#6 - Drowsy Driver Detection

This feature was a natural addition, given the introduction of Active Driving Assist. It monitors your behavior and can detect when you’re becoming tired or losing focus on the road. Then it will alert you that it’s time to take a break.

If you plan on using Active Driving Assist, Drowsy Driver Detection can ensure you don’t become too distracted—or tired—while allowing your Cherokee to steer, brake, and accelerate for you. It’s a smart addition that greatly increases safety.

#7 - Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection

The prior Cherokee did offer collision warnings and automatic braking, but only reacted to other vehicles. The 2026 Cherokee features pedestrian and cyclist detection, making it even more suitable for cities and suburbs where pedestrians and cyclists are prevalent.

If you navigate areas where people get around in all kinds of ways—on four wheels, two wheels, or two feet—the new Cherokee is better equipped to help you avoid collisions and monitor your surroundings.
